Recently, there have been some pretty serious rumors circulating about an Eddie Murphy re-make. The 1988 hit comedy, “Coming To America” is said to be gearing up for it’s 21st century comeback.

On Wednesday night (March 15th), Murphy’s twitter account posted, “Coming to America sequel?” depicting an image of Vanessa Bell Calloway.

Understandably the overwhelming social responses flooded Twitter. However, it is reported that the star did not tweet the message himself. According to an Instagram post (of a screen-shotted text message) by his daughter, Bria Murphy, it appears that her father was unaware he even had a twitter account.

Murphy’s team revealed that he doesn’t tweet; his marketing team handles all social media. Since Wednesday, the tweet and Eddie’s verified twitter account have been deleted. However, the abrupt absence of the social post is surprisingly not attributed to the inaccuracy of the event; rather, the timing. Supposedly, the announcement is true, but wasn’t supposed to be released to the public yet. Sources close to Eddie Murphy state that the comedian is in the early developmental stages of producing the follow-up script.

The tweet sent fans into a frenzy at the thought of the nearly 30-year-old film receiving a second-shot at fame. The first film was a box office hit; as the third highest-grossing picture in the U.S. of 1988 and two-time Oscar nominee. The cast of the original movie starred Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Eriq La Salle, James Earl Jones, Louie Anderson, John Amos, Shari Headley, Jake Steinfeld, Allison Dean, Frankie Faison and Paul Bates.

The premature disclosure also caught co-star Vanessa Calloway by surprise, “I would love to do a sequel, I loved the movie. It would be a perfect sequel; I know everybody would love to do it. It’s a great movie, it’s iconic, it stood the test of time…” (TMZ).

There’s no confirmation on which members of the original cast will return for the potential film. Although, it seems likely that Murphy would bring back close friend, Arsenio Hall in his role as ‘Semmi’.

The first film was a success, but also led to an infamous Hollywood court case: Buchwald vs. Paramount (1990). The case involved humorist and writer Art Buchwald allegedly accusing Paramount Pictures of stealing his script idea and turning it into the 1988 movie, ‘Coming to America’. Buchwald won the lawsuit and was awarded damages, and then accepted a settlement from Paramount before any appeal took place.

No official statements have been made by Eddie Murphy, director John Landis, or Paramount Pictures regarding the potential upcoming film. However, the speculated plot is as follows:

“Akeem & Lisa’s daughter leaves America to go to Zamunda where she falls for the son of the woman he was betrothed to.”

Similar to Twitter, we’re not exactly sure how we feel about the potential sequel. With the film’s reputation as a classic, we are convinced that the spin-off with either be an impressive hit or blatant miss.
