Reportedly, Idris Elba will star in the Netflix comedy series, ‘Turn Up Charlie’. The Emmy-nominated actor has signed on with the streaming mogul for an 8-episode series to begin filming in May 2018.

Elba plays a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor on the brink of life-changing success. When faced with the challenge of looking after his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter, the impromptu gig of parenthood could be what inevitably derails his career.

This role is close to Elba’s heart, having first started his career as a DJ in East London before making it to the big screen. Last year, he returned to the DJ booth at NYC’s Output as “DJ Big Driis”, also performing alongside Mambo Brothers and Bob Sinclar at Hi Ibiza.

If this comedy series is any reflection of Elba’s prior box office successes, the production is sure to be a hit. This isn’t the actor’s first debut in comedy, with the announcement of his 1980’s-set comedy series, ‘In The Long Run’ airing in the UK last month.

Directed by Tristram Shapeero and Matt Lipsey, the production is written by Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran, Victoria Asare-Archer; executive produced by Elba, Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero and co-executive produced by Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito.

Most recently, Elba has been highly recognized for his role as John Luther in BBC’s Luther, for which he received multiple Emmy nominations. He has also starred in the films Thor, American Gangster, Pacific Rim, Prometheus, Madela: Long Walk To Freedom, Rock N’ Rolla, The Losers, Obsessed, Legacy and more.
